NSPCC visit 13th February 2018

Dear Parent/Carer,
The NSPCC’s Speak out. Stay safe. programme is visiting our school on Tuesday 13th February to ensure our pupils have the knowledge and understanding they need to stay safe from abuse.
Speak out. Stay safe. is a nationwide programme for every primary school aged child in the UK. With the help of mascot Buddy, specially trained staff from the charity will be presenting an assembly to the whole school, followed by workshops for Years Five and Six.
What is the Speak out. Stay safe. programme?
Information will be given to children about how to stay safe from harm and how to get help if they have any worries. Issues such as bullying and sexual abuse will be sensitively discussed without using scary words or adult language.

Talking about the Underwear Rule with your children
The NSPCC’s work in schools helps support the stay safe message that Gilded Hollins constantly promotes – and a number of child-friendly materials are available to help parents and carers carry on the conversation afterwards. That includes ‘The Underwear Rule’, a simple way for parents to help keep children safe from sexual abuse – without using scary words or even mentioning sex.
The guide uses the rules of PANTS to teach children that their body belongs to them and them alone. You can find out more and download the free resources at nspcc.org.uk/pants

Children In Need 2017
Fri 17 Nov 2017This year's Children In Need at Gilded Hollins was a complete success! The children had a great time dressing in spots, face paint and all manner of crazy outfits. Many classes completed themed activities and learned about charities. Most importantly though, with the help of our wonderful parents, we raised over £225 for Children In Need. Well done everyone!

Harvest Assembly
Fri 20 Oct 2017Year 5 wowed Gilded Hollins with their brilliant Harvest assembly. They entertained us with jokes, singing and a lot of information about Harvest, food and how to keep our bodies healthy. The parents gave wonderful feedback to the children praising their loud, clear voices, enthusiasm and speed at which they learned their lines. Well done Y5!

Mad Science Assembly 26.9.17
Tue 26 Sep 2017We all had a wonderful time at the Mad Science Assembly led by Atomic Alana. During the show we investigated acidity and alkalinity with the aid of a red cabbage, we operated an Archimedes Screw, lit bulbs with electricity that ran through our bodies from a plasma ball, burned oxygen to move objects, and produced fire from water (with a few additions!). Homework letter September 2107

Please find below details of the homework we will be setting your child / children for the year ahead.
Reading: It is a national expectation that your child reads for 15 minutes every day. Reading is like any skill and practice makes perfect. To encourage our children to read we will be launching on Monday 18th September our ‘Journey to the Jurassic’. The competition will run along the same lines as last year’s Race to Rio and Boeing to Bimma. Air miles can be collected for reading for 15 minutes five times each week (a maximum of 25 miles weekly). Weekends can be set aside as time to catch up should any weekdays be missed.
How it works - Each time a pupil brings their planner signed by an adult to confirm they have completed their 15 minute daily read they will be awarded five air miles. These are recorded in class. As the days and weeks progress each pupil’s total number of air miles will accrue. Once a reader has reached 150 air miles they will win a coveted Scolosaurus badge to wear proudly around school. Daily reading checks will be carried out by volunteers chosen to be Passport Controllers. At some point each day, readers with signed evidence will show it to Passport Control as proof of their reading, and their planners will be stamped accordingly to indicate that day’s air miles have been awarded.
Maths: A relevant section of IXL Maths is to be completed each week. IXL is an online maths program that covers a wide range of skills in a fun and interactive way. It offers the opportunity to practise focused skills, and will even demonstrate why answers may be incorrect and how to solve the problem next time. Please look out for individual logon details in your child’s planner. Obviously, we understand that some children will not have access to a tablet, laptop, computer, or internet at home. In order to ensure inclusion, we plan to set up a number of fun computer clubs that will run at various times during the school week. This will offer the opportunity for those children who cannot access IXL at home to do so in school - and offer additional school time for those pupils who would like to tackle further IXL challenges. Details of the days and times of the clubs will follow. At the end of each term a report will be generated and sent out to parents to inform them of their child’s progress through the IXL program.
Spellings: Weekly spellings will be practised at home using a variety of methods highlighted by class teachers. Up to 20 spellings will be given and these will include 4/5 Key Words weekly. ‘Key Words’ are those highlighted in the National Curriculum that a child is expected to know by the end of their school year. In Years Five and Six pupils will be challenged to put tricky words into a sentence as part of the spelling test.
Multiplication tables: Pupils are to be provided with a weekly multiplication revision sheet as part of their homework. One of the targets of our school improvement cycle this year is a big push on learning multiplication tables.
As ever, we will monitor and evaluate how the homework system is working and make amendments and improvements when necessary.
We fully understand that homework can prove stressful and can make busy family lives even busier. Therefore, we want the homework our children are asked to complete to be beneficial, relevant and fun. You will see that the homework set this year will, for the most part, reflect learning that has taken place in class that week – whether that is the particular sound learned in a Key Stage One class, or the letter string or maths objective worked on in Key Stage Two.
Homework is one of the ways in which we can ensure learning continues, and is consolidated, outside the classroom. It should develop independence, resilience and a sense of accomplishment.
But we cannot achieve this without your help. We set great store at Gilded Hollins on our partnership between school and home. We all want the same end goal – for your children to achieve to their full potential; to be the best they can be. Your support in encouraging your child to complete their homework on time, to pack it into their bags for its return to school, and to listen to them read for 15 minutes daily will be very much appreciated.

LOGOS Art Exhibition
Wed 14 Jun 2017Gilded Hollins pupils have displayed their talents at an art exhibition staged at Leigh Sixth Form College.
The LOGOs Cluster (Lowton and Golborne Schools), of which we are a part, set up the gallery as part of a project to highlight the artistic skills of our young people.
The art work produced by our Year Six class was linked to recent 'Diversity' work with the Anne Frank Trust.
The exhibition runs until Friday 16th June and is open from 3.30pm- to 5.00pm. Admission is free. The college is situated on Sale Way (along from the Leigh Centurions' stadium). Please pop along if you have the opportunity.

Art Week 2017
Mon 05 Jun 2017This year, the theme for 'Art Week' was the 1970's. Artists and dancers visited the school to help us with various projects from cross stitch and knitting to country dancing. We also celebrated various aspects of 70's culture:
- art
- dance
- music
- food
- fashion
- games
- inventions
- and much more
As well as all of the creative work which took place, we also looked back to 1977 when Gilded Hollins was built and thought about what it would have been like for children growing up then.

Manchester Arena attack - message from the local authority
Wed 24 May 2017The appalling attack at the Manchester Arena on Monday night is currently being treated as a suspected terrorist incident. All our thoughts are with the families and friends of those who have lost loved ones or been injured or traumatised. The police, hospitals, Council and emergency services are doing all they can to support them. As a Borough we will remain strong and it is more important than ever that our communities continue to support each other.
Our school leadership team will continue to ensure the safety of our children and security of our school building, and will remain vigilant at all times.
We appreciate these terrible events will be distressing your children and the school community. We will remain open as usual and we appreciate your support in keeping the day as calm and normal as possible for the children. We have access to counselling and support services should anybody require this.
As we receive further information from Wigan Council, we will update parents/carers via our website.

Evening of Music and Dance
Fri 05 May 2017Our annual Evening of Music and Dance proved to be one of the best ever with children from Years Three to Six entertaining a packed hall with singing, music, gymnastics and dance. Well done to everyone who took part! Thanks also to our parents for supporting the event, and to our hardworking staff - particularly Mrs Burns, who organised the evening. -
